Women and Gender Studies (WGS) Building Officially Opened

What was..

The Department of Women and Gender Studies (currently School of Women and Gender Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences-CHUSS)had its humble origins in a single basement office of the Social Sciences building in 1992. The ten pioneer students alongside the equally lean number of staff found the lone typewriter, three chairs and box of library books sufficient for their needs at the time.

Thanks to the hard work of pioneer staff headed by Prof. Victoria Mwaka, and support from development partners like NORAD, Sida/SAREC, USAID, Fulbright Commission, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Department fluorished and in ten years, ably hosted the Women's World Congress 2002.

During the Congress held under the theme "Gendered Worlds: Gains and challenges", the Women and Gender Studies Building; constructed with support from the Norwegian Government, was officially opened by Ms Tove Strand, Director General NORAD. Present at the event were Vice Chancellor Prof. P.J.M. Ssebuwufu, Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister Hon. Zoe B. Bakoko, Norwegian Ambassador to Uganda H.E. Arild Retvedt Øyen among others.
